2019 Summer Mathematics Institute

The League is offering two one-week programs of the Summer Mathematics Institute in 2019. Both programs run the same week, June 23-28, 2019. One is for students entering grades 7-9 in fall of 2019 and the other is for students entering grades 10-12 in fall of 2019.

This year’s topics:
Entering grades 7-9: Mathematical Structures in Art
Students will explore the interplay of mathematics and art. Students will work alongside mathematical artists to create and analyze a variety of geometries We will focus on structures not typically taught in high school. A minimum of Algebra 1 and some geometry is necessary background.

Entering grades 10-12: Theory of Equations
Students will study the topic of “Theory of Equations”, focusing on problem solving. Theory of equations problems are often encountered in contest math. Students should have completed Algebra II and be motivated to learn challenging mathematics not taught in the typical school curriculum. Full topic description.

These are both one week residential-only opportunities. Both programs are located at Augsburg University in Minneapolis. Application deadline is April 15, 2019 or until the camp is full. Returning students are eligible for a $25 discount. Cost is $600. Tuition includes room and board and a field trip experience.
